Friday Is For Friends: My Girl Thursday

I'm SO happy to welcome my dear friend Thursday here for this week's edition of Friday is for Friends!
***********************************************************
Hello and happy Friday everyone!
My name is Thursday and I’m the girl behind a funny little blog called My Girl Thursday (a place where you can laugh with me or at me, so long as you’re laughing I’m pretty happy). My turn-ons include marathon thrifting, baking pies, succeeding at craft projects, graphic design and being a mom (although it does feel pretty wrong to list that as a turn-on). My turn-offs include Comic Sans. That’s it. I just really hate Comic Sans.

Something that I’ve been obsessing over lately is vintage hairstyles; more specifically pin-up girl looks. I’ve been watching one particular guru on YouTube and something she loves to do is add a flower to her hair as a finishing touch. I love it! A pretty bloom always seems to add the perfect finishing touch to many of these retro hair-dos.

So today I thought I’d walk you through a short and simple project so that you too could make your own pretty hair flower. This was my first time making one for myself and now I can’t wait to make a bunch in different colours!
*********Thanks again, Thursday, for this super pretty DIY!  I can't wait to try it out! xo. Katie

Weekly Wears: Posies and Poppies

With the heat of the summer, my favorite beauty trick lately has been bright lipstick.  I mean, you sweat off the rest, but the lipstick can still make you look (and feel) put together.  I like it.

Dress: borrowed from Elsie
Belt:  thrifted
Shoes:  Blowfish
Necklace:  Urban Legend

I haven't really been into the milkmaid braids on myself, though I do love them on other people.  I decided to try them today for a change, and I actually liked them!  I stuck some colorful flowers in the braids and felt like a million (sweaty) bucks.  ;)  Seriously though, having my hair off my neck was wonderful.  This will be one of my go-to hairstyles for a while.

What are some of your favorite beauty tricks when it comes to high temperatures?  I'd love to hear them!  xoxo Katie

Friends and Winners

I love this post by Vanessa recapping our wonderful day in Kansas City together.  We did so much shopping, laughing, and chatting... it was one of my very favorite days this summer.  Unfortunately, my camera decided that I didn't need all the pictures I shot of our trip, and took it upon itself to delete them.  All.  Though I was bummed, it helps that my sidekick also had her camera by her side.

She's not joking around when she said that there were men HANGING out of doors watching us try and do photos.  It wasn't because we are so irresistible, we were being laughed at--  ESPECIALLY when I was trying to use the timer on my camera.  I was running back and forth to push the button and get back to the picture in time...  I'm sure we looked ridiculous.  In the best way.  ;)  I miss that girl.

Oh!  The winner for the Forage giveaway is:
I'll be emailing you shortly, Kelly!
I hope your week is going great.  I SUUUPER excited about some things on the horizon, and I can't wait to share really soon!  xoxo Katie

P.S.  There are still a few medium and small ads left.  If you are wanting to snatch one, now is the time!  <3

Etsy Love: Back To School

I always loved back-to-school shopping.  My grandma would load us up, take us to places where we usually didn't get to shop (ahem, the mall), and let us pick out any pretty thing we wanted.  Plus, we'd get to ride the escalator up and down and up and down... she was a pretty patient woman in those days.  ;)

Here are some of my favorite back-to-school picks:

A smart dress is a must.

Slick heels are sure to make you the teacher's pet.

Intelligent accessories will be the icing on the cake.

A pretty notebook to jot down notes is A+.

As I won't be going back to school, I'll be enjoying my back-to-school shopping as a teacher again this year (homeschool).  I'm buckling down and ordering Hope's curriculum this week, because July is almost over and school will be here before you know it!  Eeeeep, I can hardly believe it!
xoxo Katie

Congratulations, Sparklegirl.  You win shoes.  Really good ones.
I'll email you soon.

Guest Post: Hope and Bowling

Hi, everyone-- it's Hope again!  Our family really loves to go bowling.  My favorite thing to do when we go bowling is dance to the loud music, not to mention I'm pretty good at it!

The balls are heavy so it is hard for me to pick them up and roll them, but I still rock!
Making shadow puppets is one of the BEST things about bowling!
Since the ball is so heavy I have to hold on to it tight so I don't throw it backwards.  I've done that a couple of times!
It is VERY important to take a dance break while you are bowling.
P.S.  It's true.
Goodbye!  I'll see you again soon! --Hope

Hair Tutorial on A Beautiful Mess

I'm sure most of you already know by now, but last week I helped Elsie share a fun tutorial for rag curls on A Beautiful Mess!  It was a lot of fun.  :)

Rag rolling your hair to make it curly has been around for ages!  It's such an easy way to get some major curls happening on your head, with little more than a good night's sleep.  Just remember, the tighter you roll your hair, the tighter your curls will be!  You can pop by Elsie's blog to view the full steps.  Happy curling!  xoxo Katie

Music Monday: The Honey Trees (again)

Yep, this edition of Music Monday features the Honey Trees (again).  To be perfectly honest, it's been a little rough lately hanging out with a sad teething baby, and then today losing a ton of pictures due to a corrupted CF card.  Listening to the Honey Trees makes things better whether I'm sad or already happy, though.  I love how something as simple as music can lift spirits.  That's why music is the best.  :)

Happy Monday, friends.  xoxo Katie

Friday Is For Friends: Food Coma

I have a new feature here on my blog called "Friday Is For Friends".  You're going to hear from many talented people each Friday, and I'm so pleased to have Emma as my first guest.  Her blog Food Coma is one of my VERY favorites, and I think she is seriously one of the coolest gals I know!

Hello Skunkboy readers! I'm Emma and I'm the gal behind the Food Coma blog. I love baking, cooking and mostly importantly: Eating. Yes, I capitalized Eating. And I meant it.

It's been really hot in my neighborhood lately, so I've been focusing a lot of summer cooking efforts toward cold treats. The colder the better. Here's how to make Frozen Pink Lemonade, its a delicious and SUPER easy treat to make for hot summer night dinner parties on the back porch.

All you need is a can of frozen lemonade concentrate (think Minute Maid, and it can usually be found in the frozen section at most grocery stores). In a large bowl combine the concentrate with about 1/2 of the water the directions call for. You want to use less water because we are making a dessert and not a beverage. Taste the mixture and if it seems too tart to your liking add sugar or other sweeteners that you prefer, and mix well.

Now freeze the mixture in the bowl for several hours (or over night). You want your lemonade to be a slushie consistency. Not frozen solid, but not a liquid either. Once it's ready use a fork to loosen up the mixture into tiny icicles, like a snow cone. Serve with a little lemon zest and a garnish with a lemon wedge. Easy, cold and yummy. xo. Emma

***Thank you again, Emma, for this recipe!  I can't wait to try it out this weekend.  hugs, Katie***

Weekly Wears: Forest Picnic

Last week Johnny and I had a sweet little picnic on top of a cliff, mostly surrounded by trees and water.  The weather was strangely gorgeous for this time of year, and we soaked up every second of it.  While driving home we found this sweet little abandoned stable and decided it was the perfect place for photos!  We actually might need to go back soon and take advantage of it some more because it's just so pretty.

 Dress:  ASOS
Tights:  Target
Bow and Shoes:  borrowed

We had a really lovely time.  Sometimes life just calls for a picnic.  :)

The Organization of Things

I've decided lately that I need a little more organization in my life... and by a little, I mean A LOT.  My former studio is now a baby room, which leaves me stuffing work supplies in every nook and cranny around the house.  I'm currently working on a special project that, when completed, will leave me (hopefully) with a tidy house and a ton of motivation.  Fingers crossed!

This is my first bit of organization inspiration.  How could I not want to stuff the pockets of this lacey lovely?  I can't wait to share when it's all finished.  :)

I'm spending my day in Kansas City with the super sweet Vanessa today.  Sometimes getting away for a girl's day is just what the doctor ordered!  Happy Wednesday!  xoxo Katie

Hair DIY: Favorite Way to Wear 'Em

My bangs are getting long.  I've promised myself that I won't cut them until after the summertime heat subsides, so I find myself pinning them a lot.  Here is my current favorite way to them:

See what I mean?  Long.
Bobby pins to the rescue!

It's oh-so simple!

hugs and hugs-- Katie

Breakfast Time.

One of my very favorite things to do is get up early (okay, not actually early) and go out for breakfast with my sweet family.  Saturday we decided to try a new (to us) little diner for a fun breakfast date.

(Johnny is going to hate that I posted this photo.  Sorry, dear.)
See that amazing plate of food up there?  I couldn't even conquer half of it.  I don't know what I was thinking:  biscuits, hashbrowns, eggs, and bacon all covered in gravy.  This is nap inducing food.

Oh, and guess who started eating big girl food...
Poesy loves rice cereal.  The end.
xoxo Katie
