Saying Goodbye

I'm traveling to be with family today, as we all gather to say "goodbye" to my grandma.  It's bittersweet, really.  She had been struggling with her health for some time now, and though I wish I could always have her around, she's not fighting anymore.  She has peace now, and I'm thankful for that.

One of my favorite times during my childhood was when my brother and I would get to spend a couple of weeks every summer at my grandma and grandpa's house.  We LOVED being there.  They had a basement with a pool table, a pantry with all our favorite snacks, and toys galore.  We thought that place was heaven on earth.  My grandma would always make these crazy-wonderful breakfasts and we would have "tea parties" every evening with my grandpa (which just meant eating a whole bunch of ice cream with chocolate syrup!).  We would have card game marathons and watch Scooby-Doo.  They really would spoil us rotten and we loved every minute of it.  I will miss her so much, but I will hold these memories close to my heart for the rest of my life.  Every time I smell fresh baked bread I will remember being in their kitchen as the sun was rising.  Every time I see pink curlers I will remember her trips to the beauty salon and how she'd let us run our fingers through her curls and giggle.  Every time I curl up under a hand-stitched quilt I will remember her and all the love she had for us.
I love you, Grama.

  7. Some of my best childhood memories where at my grandma's. We never wanted to leave. My grandma just found out that her cancer is in remission and I cried with joy. She is my last living grandparent so I cherish any time I get to be with her. I'm dorru for the loss if yours and am glad she is at peace. Xoxo

  16. My grandmother passed away when I was 17, and I miss her every day. I had lived with her, my grandfather, and my mother my entire life, so we were all incredibly close. It was hard, and I'm terribly sorry for your loss. But, having good memories like the ones you have will help her live on.

  33. Sweet Katie,

I'm so sorry to hear of the passing of your grandmother. I lost mine last September and I know the hurt it can bring.

Even though I surrounded myself with her memories, I was so scared that her voice would be lost to me. With the time that has passed and the time that is passing, I've come to realize that her voice is as strong as ever. When I'm feeling lost and wishing she was there, I can hear her and her wisdom beside me, just as you will be able to hear yours.

Our loved ones that have crossed over don't really ever leave. Their love turns into a star that shines ever bright above you.

Much love and peace to you and your family during this time. <3
