Thank You.

As many of you already know, my step dad (who has been with my mom since I was 9 or 10) passed away Saturday night.  This is something personal enough that I would typically keep it to myself, but a panicked phone call from my mom at the beginning of Saturday's events left me stunned, and in a freaked out moment I tweeted about it.

I was overwhelmed with an outpouring of tweets and emails and texts, and I really just wanted to say thanks.  Thanks for your prayers and thanks for the love.  It is a difficult situation for everyone, but my heart just aches for my mom.  I can't even imagine the pain she's going through.

If it runs across your mind, my mom could use a little prayer here and there.  When this whirlwind of funeral arrangements and out-of-town company passes, we will all go back to our daily lives.  She and my youngest brother will be the ones with the big hole left in their everyday.

  25. Katie,
My mom and I lost my biological father when I was 8 months old (she was 18) and got remarried to a man I grew up calling "dad". He passed away when I was 17 and my half-brother was 11. My mom was widowed twice by the age of 35. The first year or so was incredibly difficult and we still miss him horribly, but just remind your mom to take things day by day. Some days are harder than others. Praying for lots of support, listening ears, and shoulders to cry on when your mom and brother need it most! Thinking of all of you.

  31. I'm so sorry. My brother died last week from a several year illness leaving a young wife and two little girls. I know what your going thru as this weekend we had the funeral and viewing. You have my deepest sympathies.

  32. My heart goes out to your mom and you and the rest of your family. My fiance was killed last year...being widowed is...the hardest thing (to say the least). I'll say a prayer for her. My advice for you is to not be afraid to talk about him with her and to make sure she knows she's not alone. People have a tendency to abandon widows, usually without realizing they are doing it, when all we want is someone to just be there. ((hugs))

I know you have been hearing this alot, but my prayers are with you and your family in this difficult time. After loosing 6 close family members this year, I have really grown to understand how much hurt can linger after something like this happens. Be there for your mom and family, and be sure to take care of yourself too. Again, I'm sorry and blessing to you all!

You are right to use the word "whirlwind" to describe what happens after something like that...I went through it with my own father about a year and a half ago, and I remember it as such a big blur. It's the hardest thing! The best you can do is to be there for your Mom, and help her with whatever you can...believe me, there will be a lot to do.
    Stay strong friend!

  54. I just now stumbled upon your lovely blog, and just wanted to say how sorry I am for your loss! This is a quote I have always enjoyed that I thought I would leave with you...“Perhaps they are not stars, but rather openings in heaven where the love of our lost ones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know they are happy.” Thinking of you and sending a few extra smiles your way! <3

  69. Oh Katie, I am so sorry :(. I'm just now seeing this. This past week has been filled with major losses - one of my dearest friends tragically drowned, and my sister's best friend passed away as well. Reading this, I just can't believe there have been so many goodbyes within a matter of days. I can only imagine how difficult this must be for you and your mom. I am sending so much love to you and your family. You're all in my heart.

    Love,
